Team: Star's Salon (Girl's Majors ages
10-12)
Coach: Dave Ritenburg
We had a very fun season. I went into the season not knowing anyone
on the team, so I was very happy to find a team full of great,
coachable girls.
We started the season with 6 consecutive losses [ 4 of them by 1 run].
We finished by winning our final 2 games. What impressed me was the
steady improvement that the team showed. We made more and more plays in
the field as the season went on, and the swings of the younger girls
improved dramatically.
We capped the season with a kids/ adults game in the extreme heat. We
had a good turn out and I am sure that I wasn't the only adult with
some sore muscles afterwards.
I would like to give a big thank you to the parents for being
supportive and having such great kids.
I would also like to say that the sportsmanship shown amongst the teams
was outstanding. I had not coached in the EYRL since 2004, but I had
coached for 7 years previously and the sportsmanship has never been at
a higher level. |

June 6th D-Day Anniversary
Today is the 66th Anniversary of D-Day, the largest seaborne
invasion in history. Twelve allied nations provided 3 million troops to
fight. The occupation of Normandy was crucial for the Western Allies to
bring the war to the western border of Germany. By the end of the day
9000 troops had been killed or wounded. But 100,000 had established
control in French villages that would later lead to the end of the
war.

Memorial Day 2010
“Philip’s vehicle hit an IED!” exclaimed my daughter-in-law,
Sam.......When I heard those five words as I was driving down
the road with my soon-to-be new wife, Michele, I immediately became
someone who could begin to imagine what it must be like to lose a son
to war. My oldest boy, Philip, deployed to Afghanistan in January
of this year with his United States Marine Corps unit out of Camp
Lejeune, North Carolina. Though I would pray for his safety, I
never gave much thought to what it would be like to hear some detail
Marine Corps officer tell me that my son was killed in action.
It’s hard to describe my reaction to hearing on that mid-March day that
his vehicle had been blown up, and that he had been injured.

Middle School Rocket Launch ~ Mission Accomplished!
Mr. Gavenda and his eighth grade science students had been waiting

happy to announce that no people were hit or injured with only one
rocket ending up in the pond all day. Apparently, another miniature
missle took on a parked school bus during its flight and lost. Thanks

Ovid's Blue Water Motel Is History
What once was a popular motor inn along the Blue Water Highway
(M-21), is now just a pile of rubble that will soon be removed by the
property's new owners, the Village of Ovid. On Sunday April 11, the
OMFD had a successful controlled burn training exercise to remove what
had become quite an eyesore over the past few years. Originally built
around 1950 by Ovid builder Jack Baker for owner and local mortician
Dave Houghton, the structure was transformed into apartments in the
1970's. Many locals will remember the fun-filled putt putt golf course
just west of the motel.

Marauder Lady Bowlers Shine Bright In State Finals Singles
Action
Ovid Elsie had three girls reach the MHSAA
State Finals field of 59 bowlers Saturday at Airport Lanes in Jackson.
The morning action consisted of a 6 game qualifying block with the top
16 highest total pinfalls reaching the afternoon match play finals. O-E
junior Sara Smith finished with the 9th highest qualifier and sophomore
Leah Hartman eeked out a 14th place finish to make the match play
action by only three pins. Freshman Mak Palatka also had a strong 23rd
place showing but came up 24 pins short to advance.
The match play finals games are a two-game total pins
format. In the round of 16, Sara lost to the eventual finals runner up
Britney Nadeau while Leah lit up the scoreboard with the highest series
rolled in all of match play (208/215-423) to reach the quarterfinals
and face off with Perry's Taner Grennell. Ms. Hartman came through
again in the clutch to reach the semi-finals and a shootout with
Nadeau. After the first game, Leah had a slim two pin lead (189-187)
but came up a little short in game two and missed making the
championship match by 13 pins. GREAT JOB LADIES!
In Friday's boys team finals, the Marauders finished
in 15th place overall with a total pinfall of 3163. Congratulations go
out to Coach Fabus and all team members on a successful
season.
